American Idol 9 Top 24 Part 1: Top 12 Girls Recap + Roundup + Poll
A couple of things stood out to me during tonight's American Idol Top 24 Part 1: Top 12 Girls performance show:
1. Simon Cowell is the star of this franchise and tonight marks the beginning of our nostalgia trip at how much we love him on the show.
2. Ellen DeGeneres is nervous.
3. Even with Simon and Ellen, the contestants are still the main attraction.
A lot of people found this show vocally lacking and boring -- which is ok by me. I've realized that part of the appeal of American Idol is that people love to rant that it's the worst show on Earth. So in my mind, if it's bad enough to get people talking, the show has done it's job. But it wasn't all that bad really.
There were some standouts like the "quirky girls": Lilly Scott, Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox. Michelle Delamor outsang Ashley Rodriguez. Didi Benami gave an excellent performance in my opinion even if Simon dissed her. And Katie Stevens can still win this thing, even is Simon dissed her as well.
The only thing that worries me is that I honestly don't think the boys will do much better than the girls on Wednesday - so it means more rants from the people all around me.
My prediction to leave on Thursday: Paige Miles and Lacey Brown.
Here's a poll of your favorites tonight and recaps from around the Internet:
'Idol' ladies struggle with song choice, counting (NY Post PopWrap) - Sadly, after the first "American Idol" performance show, I have my doubts about the women's ability to churn out current sounding hits ... and to count!
'American Idol' Recap: The Top 12 Women Kick Off The Real Competition (Jim Cantiello) - From LA!
American Idol Season 9 – Top 12 Girls (Howard Stump) - Ellen releases the tape of Simon groping her, and like many things on Idol, it goes on just a bit too long.
Top 24 Girls Recap - "If It Was a Mess, It Was a Hot Mess" (Vote for the Worst) - Ryan Seacrest starts off the show by saying that this year’s group is incredible. Fast forward 2 hours and I can tell you that Ryan Seacrest is a damn dirty liar.
Lilith Fair 2010? American Idol ranking, semifinal night, top 12 gals (Rodney Ho) - Night No. 1 was okay. The producers definitely put the better singers in the second hour. And it was Lilith Fair redux with a mugful of intense coffeehouse balladry and not as much big vocal Whitney Houston-style singing.
American Idol 9 – Top 12 Girls – Recap (MJ Santilli) - Ha ha! Shout out! Ryan says he saw the article in the New York Post about Simon!! I wrote that!
Here’s what I don’t love about you: AI9 Top 24 (Girls) (Melinda Green) - Well thank Flying Spaghetti Monster we are done with the auditions. And Hollywood Week. We have made it this far, it’s all downhill from here, right? Finally — Season 9 of everyone’s favorite karaoke crapfest is here!
The 'American Idol' Top 24, Part 1: Quirky Girls Rule (Lyndsey Parker) - Tuesday night the search for the next American Idol got serious, but it actually was an evening when quirkiness reigned supreme.
I’ve Got 12 Girls, What’s A Guy To Do? (Joes Place Blog) - So tonight’s show was definitely interesting, though I think a lot of the girls disappointed.
‘American Idol’ Wishes Upon A Star (Maura Johnston) - Perhaps it was growing pains, or perhaps it was just the whole resituating of things with the arrival of newly minted judge Ellen DeGeneres, but the whole enterprise seemed a bit… off.
Ann Powers: The girls work the quirkiness, and the smarts (LA Times) - Song selection. It's what the judges love to mention, the first true or false step any "Idol" striver makes, before she even opens her well-glossed lips.
Idol: Girl power on short display (Joey Guerra) - Idol has been telling us since the beginning of the season that this is the "year of the girls! Girl power! Ladies first!" But Tuesday's mundane episode did little to prove that.
