American Idol 7 - iTunes Top 20 and Weekly Charts - 03/27/08 - "Billie Jean" Debuts at #1, #2 in all of iTunes

American Idol 7 iTunes Charts for March 27, 2008 (updated at 12:57 PM)

We have 3 charts this week, so hopefully people won't get confused. I am tracking the Overall Top 20 which is cumulative sales, Weekly Top 10 for the songs recorded this week and the Weekly Top 10 for all the songs.

The biggest news is that David Cook's "Billie Jean" enters all our charts at #1. "Billie Jean" is also the #2 selling track in the entire iTunes catalog this week -- since I am writing this in the morning, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the #1 song by the end of the day or tomorrow. Such is the power of American Idol! Steve Jobs must be loving this.

For the Archey Angels who are a bit dismayed, some analysis: It looks like the songs make the bulk of their sales on the week they are released. That's why "Let It Be" leapfrogged "Imagine" after only 2 weeks, and now "Billie Jean" actually debuts at #1. Think of it as film box office sales. Also, viewers tend to buy "the rest of the catalog" of the singer they like, which explains the jump in all of David Cook's songs this week.

"Imagine", "Hallelujah" and "Let It Be" are still selling (they have "legs" to borrow another marketing term), but the David Cook collection got a massive boost this week from "Billie Jean".
