Let's get this show on the road!

Recap

-Because it's only a half-hour tonight, we open with a montage version of the Idol Dinner Club, where the contestants go out to eat, chat about the show that just ended, and basically get all cute. Malaya impersonating a Sam fan is fun. I just love their friendship as the two youngest in the competition. We get some other stuff, such as Alex being nervous because everyone was so good, and Caleb saying he prefers to have the band right there onstage with him.

-Ryan intros the show by announcing that for one of the contestants, "The other shoe is about to drop." He then drops the shoe, in reference to the whole shoe-stealing business from last night. Cute. I should note that the crowd is strangely rabid tonight once the judges come out. It's so distractingly lively.

RANDY'S THOUGHTS

-Also known as "I couldn't care less" Theater. Randy says his favorites were Caleb, Malaya, and Jena, adding that "the cream is starting to rise to the top." He then told the other six contestants, "Time to catch up if you want to win this." Surprised. Figured he'd think higher of Alex Preston.

RESULTS, PT. 1

-So Ryan announces we'll be seeing the results on the big screen tonight. Basically, their faces will pop up on the screen announcing their safety.

JENA IRENE is safe!

MALAYA WATSON is safe!

-Ryan then reveals that the next safe contestant will learn their fate after Janelle Monae performs AFTER the break.

JANELLE MONAE PERFORMS "WHAT IS LOVE"

-Not the Haddaway song from the 90s. This is her song from the Rio 2 soundtrack. The judges take turns with Ryan introducing her, and it just sounds so jarring to hear them adopt "Seacrest speak."

-The song is catchy, with a lot of rhythm. It's almost like something Gloria Estefan might have sang in the late 80s/early 90s. Unfortunately, the song is so boisterous it doesn't really provide a chance for her to really showcase her vocals. And the production with all the striped dancers with the feathers is pretty distracting. With that said, I wish Majesty Rose would go back to being more like Janelle. Her performance of "Tight Rope" was the best thing she's done since the live shows started.

-Confetti! SO MUCH CONFETTI. I feel awful for whoever has to clean that up.

-Back from break, Detective Elliot Stabler is in the audience. Er...I mean, Christopher Meloni. Along with the rest of the cast of Surviving Jack, which premieres next. Sorry dude, you'll never not be Det. Stabler to me.

RESULTS, PT. 2

-Ryan turns our attentions back to the screens...

ALEX PRESTON is safe!

JESSICA MEUSE is safe!

CALEB JOHNSON is safe!

(These three continue to be the only ones, along with CJ, not to have appeared in the bottom 3 yet this season)

-So there's one spot left now, and the remaining three will be the bottom 3. Let's get to it...

DEXTER ROBERTS is safe!

-WOW. Was NOT expecting that. With each week, my Hollywood Week prediction of Dexter finishing in 7th place comes closer to being true.

-So the bottom 3 are Sam, Majesty, and CJ. Ryan asks Jen for her thoughts, but Harry mishears him and speaks up himself. J-Lo doesn't mind though, and so Harry continues, noting that America is smart, and is a much more discerning audience. One of these three will be singing for the save, and honestly, I think it's between Majesty and CJ. If it were up to me, CJ would be sent packing, which is something I never thought I'd be saying this early in the competition, if you'd have asked me three weeks ago. But it's really his time, in my opinion. That said, if it's Majesty, I could seriously see the Save being used tonight.

FINAL RESULTS

-We're back, and Ryan asks J-Lo if any of the three struck them differently when she heard the show back vs. what she heard in the studio. And she admits that one of them did, but she says she'll tell Ryan after the show. I'm thinking Sam?

-So it's time to find out which of Sam, Majesty, or CJ is going home...

SAM WOOLF is safe!

CJ HARRIS is safe!

MAJESTY ROSE received the fewest number of votes and will sing for the Save!

-Upon hearing the news, Majesty shouts "I KNEW IT!" and starts nervous laughing. Then she starts asking for the mic so she can get it done. God, where has this Majesty been?!

-She sings "Happy" by Pharrell, and honestly, it's only about half-good. But I LOVE the energy. Seriously, this is kind of a blast, even under the circumstances. It's messy and real and vibrant and I basically love it. Even as she ends and strikes a pose with a big-ass smile on her face. She seems like she's kind of ready for all this to be over, but I think she has the best shot of getting a save of any of the remaining contestants.

-Keith announces that it has been the hardest deliberation for them so far, but by "a narrow, narrow margin," they will NOT be using that save. Why do I get the feeling Harry is the sole holdout every time?

-Ryan says that, on the bright side, Majesty will be on the tour, and she's really happy about that. We then get a cute bit where Ryan and Majesty promise to always be friends, and I guess that'll have to make up for the lack of a farewell video. I suppose the cut to a half-hour required getting rid of it. But it's a more than fair trade-off since 1) I'm loving how quickly this show moved, and 2) I doubt her version of "Breakaway" would have been all that distinguishable amid all the clips and crowd noise, etc.

-So what did you think of the results? Did the right act go home? Should the judges have used the Save? Sound off in the comments!

Thanks for joining me tonight! You guys have been great, not that that's a surprise or anything.

GOODNIGHT!
