American Idol 2014 - Top 6 Results - Live Blog and Recap

Welcome to the live blog and recap of American Idol XIII, "Top 6 Results"! The Top 6 will become the Top 5 tonight! Which singer will be eliminated?

Rickey.org readers predict that CJ Harris will be eliminated, having received one of the highest vote totals in the history of any poll we've done. A whopping 76.13% of readers predict this to be the end of his Idol journey. The next closest vote-getter is Jessica Meuse, who received just 7.97% of the vote. Last is Sam Woolf, who is predicted to round out the bottom 3, having received 5.33% of the vote. Then again, we haven't had a proper bottom 3 in weeks, as the show has instead opted for a bottom 2, so it's looking like CJ vs. Jessica. But stranger things have happened! It's not too late to add your prediction, so head on over and vote! Also, check out last night's post-show power rankings and see where your favorites landed!

Let's get this show on the road!

RECAP

-Grumpy Cat is back! I'm all for Grumpy Cat just replacing Randy at this point. In fact, put Grumpy Cat on the panel. I'm sure his stern looks will make for harsher, more obstinate criticism than some contestants ever got on a singing competition these days.

-The judges are all impressed with Keith Urban, who got all dressed up for the occasion. Dude can seriously rock a suit, so I don't blame anyone for being impressed. Harry: "How great does Keith Urban look tonight?"

-Ryan reveals that Carrie Underwood tweeted how impressed she was by Caleb and Jena, and how proud she is to have had her songs performed by them.

AMERICAN IDOL DINNER CLUB

-It's Caleb's birthday dinner, and he sings about it, because he's going full Jack Black. CJ asks Caleb what was going through his head when he dropped the mic during his performance, with Caleb saying he felt like it was the end of his career. Caleb's mom, who is present for all of this, is adorable, talking about how Caleb's slide for the microphone recalled his old tennis days. Meanwhile, Jena notes how crazy the girls were going for Sam (I feel like at least half of all these dinner conversations these season involve one of the girls telling Sam how crazy his fans are for him). Caleb then gets a birthday cake, and that is not a euphemism. It's real cake. (Take THAT, Portal!)

-Aaaand we're back in the studio with a whole lot of No Results Yet.

FORD COMMERCIAL

-The contestants use the Ford's auto-dialing technology to call each other's family members and prompt them into revealing family secrets. We don't get secrets for all the contestants, but apparently, Jena sleepwalks, Jessica is really blonde, and Sam does a killer impression of a dying duck, which is...a weirdly specific talent to have.

RESULTS, PT. 1

-Randy's review of last night's show for Caleb, Sam, and CJ: Caleb had an amazing night, while Sam had a "good, solid night." Randy adds that "CJ had some struggles last night," and states he needs to pick better songs. He feels Caleb won the night, Sam was good, and CJ could be in trouble.

-And now, to the video screen for the results...

SAM WOOLF is safe!

CALEB JOHNSON is safe!

CJ HARRIS is in the bottom 2!

-No surprise there, but I'm getting nervous for Alex and Jena...

RESULTS, PT. 2

-Randy's review: Jena is looking incredibly strong. She has the eye of the tiger right now. Alex, meanwhile, continues to show his artistry, and had a "good, strong night." He feels Jessica could be in trouble though...and Alex too.

-Results...

JENA IRENE is safe!

ALEX PRESTON is safe!

JESSICA MEUSE is in the bottom 2!

-So much relief, you guys. I actually fell for all that talk of an Idol shocker. That said, the shocker could be that CJ isn't going home. He and Jessica are the last two Alabama natives, and it stands to reason they'd split votes. One of them is likely to inherit the votes from Dexter's fanbase, so the question is, which singer gets those votes, if any? That'll be the one that stays.

FINAL RESULT

-After being asked by Ryan for her opinion, J-Lo says that no matter what, a talented person will go home. Ryan asks Harry if this is the right bottom 2, and he doesn't know that "the right bottom 2" means at this stage in the competition, since everyone is talented. Keith echoes those thoughts. Ryan then asks Jessica and CJ if there's anything they'd have done differently. Jessica says nothing, as she remained true to herself. CJ says he'd have picked better songs.

-And now, the final result...

JESSICA MEUSE is safe!

CJ HARRIS has been eliminated from American Idol 2014!

-In an incredibly classy move, CJ apparently walked over to the band during his farewell video and thanked them for all their hard work during the competition. He then sings "Can't You See" by Marshall Tucker Band, and while he's still out of pitch, I liked this more than just about anything he's done since the competition started. CJ is a good man and a class act. It's just a shame he never really worked out his pitch issues, because he had one of the most promising voices in the competition.

-In a touching moment, he doesn't get to really finish the song, as the contestants come onstage to embrace him and his family is brought through the crowd to join him. After CJ talks about what he learned from the experience, and his family talks about how proud they are of him, Ryan notes that Jason Mraz will be on-hand next week to mentor the Idols. Sounds like it's Alex Preston's week to shine! You know...more so.

FINAL THOUGHTS

-I don't necessarily mean this as a complaint, since this is one of my favorite casts in some time (even if it doesn't always come through in my writing), but does this seem like the longest season in history to anyone else? When you start out with 13 contestants and go one week at a time with no double eliminations, with an extra week built in for the Save, it feels like an entire year has separated where we are now from when Ben Briley and Emily Piriz were still in this thing. And we still have a month to go! Who knows what will happen?

Honestly, I'll be stunned if the final is anything other than Caleb vs. Alex, but this was the first week where I really started to entertain the possibility that Jena could get there, herself. Normally, by this stage of the competition, week-to-week performances don't matter as much as they do early on, since fanbases are already set and the people who make it to the final will make it to the final regardless of how they do, so long as they stay the course. Or at least, it can feel that way. But I really don't feel like this finale is set in stone just yet. Should be an interesting month. At the very least, next week should be refreshing, given what the Top 5 theme is. Also, the presence of Jason Mraz as mentor could be just what these finalists need. Count me excited.

So what did you think of tonight's result? Sound off in the comments! Until next week, thanks for hanging out!

GOODNIGHT!
