American Idol 2014 Recap: Top 7 Competitor's Picks

American Idol XIII 2014 Top 7 recap and live blog for the April 16, 2014 performance show.

Theme: "Competitor's Picks"

The finalists select songs for each other to sing. Yay, a challenge! Let's see if the idols sabotage each other (or not). This is an iffy group as some of them don't know how to choose songs for themselves -- so maybe if they choose for someone else, it might actually be good? We shall see!

Remember: You don't have to wait for the end of the show to vote for your favorite contestant. Limit 50 votes per voting method.

American Idol 2014 - Recap - Top 7

(Updating throughout the show. Please be patient as I am multi-tasking. Chat in the comments below just like old times!)

The idols will be live tweeting tonight using the hashtag #idolLive. This is the first time that they've been allowed to tweet during the show. They should have done this years ago when the show had more viewers! Why are they so late with this? Sigh.

Demi Lovato of The X Factor USA is hanging out with Ryan Seacrest. Maybe she is auditioning to be a judge next season (if there is a next season).

Ryan Seacrest says these are "seven superstars in the making" ready to win our votes. Who writes this crap? :) Go Sam! Go Alex. Go CJ! Future superstars!

Interview with Demi Lovato: She just finished her US Tour. Maybe she will add more US dates.

Group Songs:

Alex Preston and Sam Woolf "Let Her Go" by Passenger - I like the cute staging. However, the harmony was not as sweet sounding as it should be. I love Alex and Sam though. Best bromance of the season. This should be a performance on the tour!

Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones. I love playing this song on Rock Band (when I used to play that game).

Alabama Trio "Compass" by Lady Antebellum. CJ destroyed the group number again... by SINGING. LOL. Awful. And Demi Lovato agreed with me!

Solos:

Caleb Johnson	"Family Tree" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-13
Review: Caleb is a huge tennis fanatic. He snores. He's afraid of the dark and spiders. He's a huge fan of horror and cult films. Song suggested by Alex Preston. Keith Urban: I love that freakin song. That was a great choice for you. You are such a consistent dynamic performer. Jennifer Lopez: You did it again. That was pretty amazing. Harry Connick Jr: Great song choice. It was so nice to see you sing a song you are happy to sing.
Jessica Meuse	"Gunpowder and Lead" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-10
Review: She has 8 tattoos. Her favorite animal is a wolf. He was rejected in a school of music. She was chased by a pony one time. She believes in aliens and thinks she was abducted one time. Sam Woolf suggested the song. Keith Urban: Your voice is the thing I've always liked about you. What happened tonight was a dissipation of energy. Jennifer Lopez: It's the first time I heard you off in the verses. It didn't seem natural. Harry Connick Jr: There's a lack of rhythmic delivery.
CJ Harris	"Gravity" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-05
Review: He loves watching Sponge Bob, he loves the grill, loves taking pictures. He wants to do stand-up comedy. He's a neat freak. Caleb Johnson suggested the song. Keith Urban: It's a really good song for you. If you do an emotional thing I would like it a bit more like art. Jennifer Lopez: To me every week you are getting more and more comfortable up there. Harry Connick Jr: I think you have arguably the greatest a gift any performer can have -- is your ability to connect with the audience.
Dexter Roberts	"Muckalee Creek Water" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-01
Review: He likes to ride fast drives, he wants to skydive one day. His first plane ride sucked. He loves strawberries and loves crickets. He loves rodeos. CJ Harris suggested the song. Keith Urban: I like that song. But be careful with songs with the melody down. Jennifer Lopez: I liked this for you. It had a nice edge that showed us a different side of you. Harry Connick Jr: You didn't do anything different from the original vocal.
Alex Preston	"A Team" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-09
Review: He likes to garden. He enjoys cooking. He enjoys freestyle skiing. He wanted to be a dermatologist. He used to be a linebacker. Dexter Roberts suggested the song. Keith Urban: Jennifer Lopez: You deserve that applause. It was a perfect song. Harry Connick Jr: Perfect perfect song.
Sam Woolf	"Sail Away" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-12
Review: He likes to climb roofs. He's not meant to play sports. He wrong "Thinking of You" on a piano, but does not play the piano anymore. He play pranks. He skateboards. Jessica Meuse suggested the song. Keith Urban: Progress is really good. I love the way you look tonight. Jennifer Lopez: When I look at the closeup to you face, I did feel it. Harry Connick Jr: You are a work in progress. You are making progress every week. You need a more familiar song.
Jena Irene	"Creep" - Watch Video	1-855-4-IDOL-08
Review: She wrote her first song when she broke up with her 6-year-old bf. She pee'd in her pants during her first performance. She wants to be a make up artist. She took up ballet... when she was 6. When she turns 18 she wants to have a tattoo of a skull. Caleb Johnson suggested the song. Keith Urban: I love it. I love your fearlessness. Jennifer Lopez: You can sing anything. Harry Connick Jr: You are a phenomenal talent.

So who's going home? Take the poll!
