'American Horror Story' Renewed for Fifth Season

Just a week into its fourth season, titled Freak Show, FX has confirmed that it has renewed American Horror Story for a fifth season.

The decision was apparently made after the ratings came back for last Wednesday's season premiere. When factoring in Live+3 viewership, the premiere broke all records for the network's programming, raking in 10 million viewers (6.54 million demo viewers, and 4.08 million adults in the 18-34 demographic). More amazingly, encore runs actually scored HIGHER ratings, bringing in 13.36 million viewers (8.6 million demo viewers and 5.25 million in the demographic). This makes the premiere of American Horror Story: Freak Show the single most-watched program in the history of the FX network, eclipsing the 9.25 million total viewers who turned out for the premire of the seventh and final season of Sons of Anarchy.

"The American Horror Story anthology has had the highest growth trajectory of any show in FX history, not to mention an unprecedented track record of success in awards recognition," said John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions. "With Nip/Tuck, Glee, The Normal Heart, and American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy has established himself as one of the most successful and prolific producers of this generation. We expect AHS: Freak Show and the next incarnation of AHS to further his legacy."

The fifth season of American Horror Story will premiere next year on FX.
