American Horror Story: Coven - Who Will Be the Next Supreme? - Theories and Poll
With only two episodes left of American Horror Story: Coven, the hunt to find the next Supreme has turned into an all out magical melee. With several young witches still partaking in the battle for power, it’s time to start theorizing just who’ll come out on top. Remember, Ryan Murphy has hinted that Coven could very well end up become a standalone spinoff series. Does that mean that the coven under the roof of Miss Robichaux’s Academy is destined to find peace by the season’s end? Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), Delia (Sarah Paulson), Misty (Lily Rabe), and, of course, Madison (Emma Roberts) remain in the running. While it initially seemed the path to finding the next Supreme would lead directly to one predestined lucky young lady, the truth is that it’s become significantly clear that this is a game of odds. You can’t be the next destined Supreme if you’re six feet under, or worse (better?), partying with Papa Legba in the great beyond. Sorry, Nan, but I think once your soul has been used as payment in a barter for another’s immortality, you’re pretty much out of the game.
Here are some theories to get the cauldron of your brain bubbling. American Horror Story: Coven… Who is the next Supreme? Place your bets!
American Horror Story: Coven - Who Will Be the Next Supreme?
FX "American Horror Story"Misty Day:
For most folks, getting sealed away in a tomb while still alive sounds like an absolute nightmare, but the swamp witch who’d been perfectly fine spending her days alone in nature prior to getting sucked into the vortex that is Fiona Goode’s personal plight for eternal youth is probably just biding her time and power. There’s no way Misty Day is gone for good, especially considering all of the buildup Coven has brought about surrounding the pureness of her character and the special nature of her ways.I think many people had Misty pegged from the start. The key to what separates her from the rest of the coven is her connection with the natural world. If we’re to assume that magic comes from the spiritual side of nature, than it would make perfect sense that the next Supreme would have the strongest connection with the world around her. Plus, could it ever be a negative to have the White Witch, Stevie Nicks, in your corner? Misty also remains almost entirely untainted by the battle for the role of Supreme. She doesn’t have any blood on her hands, and, in fact, she’s yet to betray anyone whatsoever.
FX "American Horror Story"Zoe:
It might seem anticlimactic, but we were introduced to Zoe as the character we were meant to associate with most so among the girls. We traveled with her to Miss Robichaux’s alongside Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy), and she’s given us very little reason to doubt her sincerity. She’s not power hungry. In fact, she seems to be the only young witch, aside from Delia, who truly has the coven’s best interest at heart. It took a lot of arm-twisting to convince her to hightail it over to Epcot with Kyle, but judging by the trailer for next week's episode, that trip is short lived. Could an impulsive decision to ditch those left behind be enough to lose her the title of Supreme? Probably not. It might not be the most entertaining conclusion to AHS: Coven, but you can’t argue that Zoe hasn’t earned the position among the candidates at hand. She’s about the sisterhood over the magic, and we were always lead to believe that this season would be about women coming together and exploring the dynamics of different female relationships. FX "American Horror Story"Madison:
Now that two-time Teen Choice Award winner, starlet Madison Montgomery, has returned from the bleak blackness of death, she’s even more cynical, sarcastic, and sinister. Let’s not forget that somewhere between staining the carpet and her reincarnation, Madison lost the ability to feel any true emotions whatsoever. All she has left is a sense of power and domination. Without the option of continuing to share Kyle with Zoe, Madison Montgomery has nothing to cloud her judgment but her own vanity. Thus, we have the young witch most active in the fight for the title of Supreme, as she continues to nix the competition left and right. It's all she has left. Her selfishness is matched only by Fiona, who’s clearly on her way out. If most of the women fighting for the role of Supreme are willing to kill for it, or simply to murder another human being generally speaking without any sense of remorse, why not give the title of Queen of the Coven to the girl who's doing it the best? The other option is the miniscule chance for a redemption arc. Is the girl who cried naked in the shower in a moment of sheer vulnerability during the season’s premiere episode still alive somewhere inside, or is that the part of Madison that was left dead? Do we expect her to be punished for her wicked ways or to go out with a bang that leaves us with a new sense of fondness?
FX "American Horror Story"Delia:
There probably isn’t a more fitting choice for the role of the coven’s next Supreme than Delia, who just recently gouged her own eyes out with only the mere hope of reigniting the gift of sight. Will it work? Only next week’s penultimate episode will tell. Like Zoe, Cordelia cares most about the familial bond of the coven. These Salem witches are a dying breed, and it’s up to those willing to sacrifice and do the work to preserve it. Being surrounded by “sisters” who’re willing to slit your throat in your sleep if it means gaining another one of the Seven Wonders can’t be easy. It can’t be easy to love and fight for the lives of the likes of Madison, who’s as mean as a snake in all of her hilarity, or Queenie, who ditched the coven without so much as a blink of doubt, yet Delia continues to see the potential in the good of the girls. If American Horror Story: Coven wants to end on a high note, an arc of redemption for Fiona will have to include a moment of reconciliation and forgiveness with her daughter. Would there be a more symbolic way to give this mother-daughter relationship some peace than to witness the literally soulless Fiona passing away and, thus, passing on her powers as Supreme to Delia? It all just simply makes sense. Is she even a witch, or did Jessica Lange just dump her at this awful school?A comment from my casual viewing partner last week. Obviously, Delia's had the gift of sight and we’ve watched her conjure up spells via plants and potions, but that doesn’t change the fact that AHS: Coven has certainly done a decent job of covering up any real magic coming from Delia innately. Even Zoe has her own particular brand of mojo in the form of that pesky microwave sex. Can’t all of these girls work with plants and magical herbs? What was Delia’s initial gift, if any? Maybe it’s simply the potential to be the next Supreme. FX "American Horror Story"
Queenie:
I saved Queenie for last because my theory on her potential to be the next Supreme is the most farfetched. On the surface, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for Queenie to be in the running. We’ve always known her as a supporting cast member, but we’ve never viewed her as an underdog. While Nan was still around, the rest of the girls did a good job of laughing off her odds as seizing the throne, raising our brows as viewers and starting new theories that Nan was, indeed, the next in line to be the Supreme. You have no style, and your pits smell like fish sticks.Remember that? I think the moment that line was uttered by Madison viewers everywhere gave Nan a second glance, but this isn’t about Nan. (Nan, how's (after)life with Legba?) Queenie, on the other hand, made a powerful choice in leaving the coven for Marie Laveau’s world of voodoo, and she showed no remorse for it before Hank shot the beauty shop to hell. Meaning, we wrote Queenie off, even as she continued her quest to change Delphine LaLaurie. Most of her plot throughout the entire season has truly focused on Delphine, so there’s been no real reason to hypothesize that Queenie is the next Supreme. I was always personally fine with this because the chemistry between Kathy Bates and Gabourey Sidibe is brilliant.
Now that Queenie is back under the coven’s roof, though, I have a new theory. If you recall, Queenie is the descendant of Tituba, the voodoo priestess who initially passed the ways of magic onto the women of Salem. Thus, she essentially created the coven’s line to begin with. The funny thing is, Tituba was never found. She simply disappeared. Could Queenie be Tituba? Have we ever heard Queenie truly discuss her family or life before the coven besides watching her work a 9 to 5 job as a fry cook? Perhaps that theory is too out there, but we know for a fact that she is a descendant of Tituba. Thus, it would make perfect sense that she became the next Supreme, taking the coven full circle and simultaneous putting an official end to the war between the witches and the voodoo practitioners. As previously said, this show was never intended to be about women warring, hating, envying, and clawing each other’s eyes out in a quest for power. This is intended to be a series that focuses on feminism and progress. Taking everything said into consideration, Queenie rising to the status of Supreme could serve as an unexpected and fulfilling ending to American Horror Story: Coven.
Who do you think will be the next Supreme on American Horror Story: Coven? Although she hasn’t been poised as a candidate, is Fiona's rival Myrtle Snow still in the running? Can Fiona outlive them all and hold on to her title past the finale? Be sure to share your comments and theories with the rest of us!
If it helps, here's the description to next week's episode, "Go to Hell":Cordelia's latest vision puts the Coven's future in question. With the end of Fiona's reign approaching, the girls manifest powerful new gifts. Queenie's search for Marie Laveau leads her to Hell and back.
