Alexandra Breckenridge Joins 'The Walking Dead' Season 5

Alexandra Breckenridge is coming to The Walking Dead in a major role. But what role will she play?

Reportedly, the former True Blood and American Horror Story star will play Samantha, an "attractive, strong, smart, charming and articulate woman with a vulnerable side." She's also described as "a mother with a bohemian spirit, and a talented artist." It's a recurring role for season five, although it comes with an option to be promoted to a series regular in season six. AMC hasn't revealed any further details about Samantha, although it's theorized that the name and backstory are placeholders meant to throw off the fanbase, since no character named "Samantha" exists in the comic books or the video game. That said, this wouldn't be the show's first original character, so it's not that far outside the realm of possibility that this isn't a misdirect on AMC's part.

Breckenridge is joining one of cable television's largest casts, as Season 5 of The Walking Dead features a staggering 17 series regulars, the most in the show's history. Go On and Everybody Hates Chris alum Tyler James Williams has joined the cast as the mysterious Noah, while The Wire vet Seth Gilliam will make his debut this coming Sunday as Father Gabriel. The show is also currently casting for the role of Donna, a "formidable, respected and influential journalist with integrity, strength and occasionally wise-ass humor." She's apparently a "leader, a mother and someone who reads people very well," which sounds like the perfect role for an actress the caliber of Kate Burton, who is currently the rumored frontrunner for the role. AMC denies this, but they could do a lot worse than a three-time Emmy nominee who's been on everything from Grey's Anatomy to The Good Wife to Scandal.

So what are your theories on Samantha's true identity? Is Breckenridge's role really as straightforward as it seems? Sound off in the comments!
