AI Report Card Top 9: American iDOL

One would surmise that, with a theme as expansive as “Popular Downloads On iTUNES”, the Idols have a far better chance to flex their musical muscles by choosing songs (those that are cleared to air, of course) that better suit their aesthete.

If you’ll allow me to reiterate briefly - I ranted in my last post (when don’t I rant?) how ridiculous these theme night have historically been, as if to assume an AI amateur has the capability and talent to cohere themselves to any style flung their way. While there have been a few throughout the years who could be called “stylists” , mostly it’s resulted in regrettable situations. Sure, many idols adapt to the best of their abilities, and we judge them on that, but the few ‘A-HA’ moments over the years were beget by the anointed few whose talents know no bounds. I know I’ve given examples in past posts, but so few have been so transcendent that the ones that illuminate should never be forgotten: oft-mentioned epiphanies from the likes of Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson, Elliott Yamin, Tamyra Gray, David Cook and Melinda Doolittle to name the few. You get the idea (I know, I know, forget past posts…this isn’t the first time I’ve brought these names up this season, but I promise to try to forgo future temptation. But, ya never know…)
