AI Report Card Top 7: “Idol At The Movies” Was For The Reservoir, Dawgs!

When it was announced that Quentin Tarantino would be guest mentor for the Top 7s “Idol At The Movies”, I licked my lips like Archuleta in hopes that such an expansive theme could/would be condensed to songs used only in his films. Tarantino is known for his quirky, often brilliant (and at times head-scratching) soundtracks, and that could have begotten a dichotomy of amazing and horrible. You do the math at who would be which.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought about such an appealing prospect, as other Idol writers from MJ to Maura at Idolator made their own Tarantino-inspired wish lists. Alas, our juicy dreams are left unattained.

A more challenging - and specific - at-the-movies theme could have restricted song selects that were written exclusively for a film soundtrack. While that might incur monstrous thoughts of Anoop doing “Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire” or Gokey gurgling some other Motown film tune (there are thousands that have been utilized over the years), just think of, say, Alison emoting the great “Out Here On My Own“ from the even-greater “Fame”, accompanied only by solo piano.
