'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' To Crossover With 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

After tie-ins last season with Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's not exactly a huge shock that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is planning a big-time crossover with the most anticipated movie of the summer, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“You should expect something,” said Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jed Whedon. “The Avengers is the big tent that all the franchises play under. Obviously, we’re included in that.”

However, not everyone on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. team thinks the crossover event will be as big a game-changer as its last big tie-in. To executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the high-point of crossover events for the show, as we see the fallout of Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. and destroying the organization from the inside out. Of course, this doesn't mean the Age of Ultron crossover won't feature significant developments of its own.

“I don’t think any movie has the potential to impact us in the way that Captain America 2 did,” says Tancharoen, “but there will be connections.”

The show is fresh off its momentous midseason finale, and we're only a few short weeks away from the premiere of Marvel's Agent Carter, so this is a pretty great season for the Marvel TV universe right now, without even getting into its Netflix deals (both Jessica Jones and Daredevil could be huge). I'm not sure how the show will crossover with Age of Ultron though, since the budget probably won't allow for the sort of full-scale crossover the show would probably like to have. There were already rumors that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could appear in Age of Ultron, after B.J. Britt was spotted on the set. But anyone who's seen the winter finale will likely end up more puzzled by what his presence on the set could mean. It's far more likely that the series will simply unpack the aftermath of the summer blockbuster, in much the same way it dealt with the fallout of The Winter Soldier. Either way, it should make for a hell of an event episode.
