AFI Picks Top Films, TV Shows of 2014 - Complete List
The American Film Institute is breaking from tradition this year. In the past, AFI has picked 10 films and 10 TV shows to single out as the best for a given year. However, this year, the list has expanded to 11 films (still just 10 TV shows though. Sorry, television).
This year, the 11 movies selected by AFI as the best of the year include some films that are getting their first significant awards recognition, and others that are simply adding to their collection of accolades. Into the Woods, American Sniper, The Imitation Game, and Interstellar earned their first mentions of the awards season, while Birdman, Boyhood, Nightcrawler and Whiplash have solidified their stance as likely Oscar contenders, considering seven of AFI's 10 picks last year went on to be nominated for Best Picture.
Meanwhile, on the TV side of things, we have a lot of new shows getting honored. Jane the Virgin, How To Get Away With Murder, Silicon Valley, Transparent, The Knick, and Fargo are among those getting their first nods, while Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Orange Is the New Black have also been chosen.
“We celebrate these films and television programs as more than just milestones in a year of excellence.” said AFI president/CEO Bob Gazzale in a statement. “They are a part of our American cultural heritage – collectively, a new chapter in the story of the art form and of our nation.”
This year's winners will be honored at a special luncheon on Jan. 9, the Friday before the 72nd Golden Globes on NBC.
