Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 45 - Recap - Blade of Grass

The just plain wonderful Cartoon Network smash hit Adventure Time is back for another episode in its madly long fifth season, and it is quite a good episode! I like it a lot, and I recommend that you quit this recap and go watch it right now. Then, uh, come back here and read this!

Finn does poorly in a fight with some... zombies? I think they're zombies. They're not rotting or anything, but they wander aimlessly, mumbling. Anyway, Jake has to save the stubborn human, since Finn broke his sword a few episodes back to end a demon curse. The sword's reach is pitiful now! So, after the fight, Finn and Jake head to the market for a replacement. Coming across a creepazoid grass hut, where he's sold on a grass sword. Oddly, the sword seems to cut things perfectly. Too perfectly. From a rogue pizza come to bonk Jake's head to an apple from Tree Trunks, the sword seems like it may be cursed!

That night, Finn puts the sword away and goes to sleep, dreaming of the sword taking over his body. He awakens from the dream in a start to find that the sword has somehow snuck into his sleeping bag and it begins to wrap around his hand, like in the dream! He manages to pry it from his arm and throw it into the river, but it's back by morning. Jake wraps the sword in an apron and sheaths the blade in a big loaf of bread. The pair heads to the market to return the sword.

When they reach the market to find the grass hut missing, they notice some hooligans are stealing a bunch of candles from a nearby shop. Finn has no choice but to use the cursed sword of grass to stop the hooligans. He wins, but cannot remove the sword now. Jake and Finn ask their merchant pal Choose Goose (who speaks in only rhyme) where the grass hut went. He points them to the wizard's secret hideout. The heroes head over to do battle with the wizard, who informs them that the curse of the sword is eternal. Finn says that this might not be so bad and suddenly, he can control the sword! Accepting the sword as a part of him allows Finn to retract and draw the sword with a flick of his wrist! Cool!

This was a good episode. I like the ones where Finn subtlely grows up in some small way. He's becoming this really zen teen, after having begun the series as a rambunctious eleven-year-old boy. Aging in real time is another thing I like for shows to do, and I imagine it's partly because of the growth this allows! I recommend this episode for anyone who's been skipping the show lately, since it's fairly standalone and shows just how far the cartoon has come.
