Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 38 - Recap - Red Starved

Cartoon Network is back with yet another episode in Adventure Time's very extended fifth season. The show, if you're not familiar, pairs Finn (the last human) with Jake (a magical shapeshifting talking dog) as they adventure through a post-apocalyptic fantasy version of Earth called Ooo.

On an adventure in the desert (underground in a desert kingdom, to be specific), Jake has a tummy ache. He ate something he thought was candy in Finn's bag, but Finn didn't bring any candy... During Jake's attempt to get out of some quicksand, he causes a cave-in. Marceline (a vampire who eats red, yes really) asks Finn for some of her snacks, red erasers. But then, oops, turns out that's what Jake ate. So, while Finn is off to find something red, Marcy has Jake tie her to a post so she won't eat his sweet, sweet red blood.

Finn heads deeper underground, where he finds some lava. He figures this would be a bad idea to feed to Marceline, so the search continues. eventually he gets to a chamber where a red beam of light transforms everything into sand. Finn sneaks around it to find the source of the light, a monster snail dude who doesn't even know that he's been down there for a really long time. The monster heads off after finding out he's become ancient history and Finn takes the source of the light: a big red crystal.

Back up in Jake and Marceline's chamber, Finn arrives with the crystal just in time. Unfortunately, it turns out Finn is color blind and the crystal is actually green. Marceline escapes her bindings, but luckily, Princess Bubblegum smashes through the ceiling in a big worm vehicle thing. Marcy eats some of PB's color to sustain herself and the crew heads home.

This episode was kind of unremarkable. It was sort of funny and sort of cool to look at, but didn't really blow me away in any regard. I liked the little touch of having Finn turn out to be color blind, but that's about it. Luckily, this show is on pretty much year-round, so it's not a big deal if an episode falls flat (which is very rare anyhow). I'm sure next week will be an improvement!
