Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 29 - Recap - Sky Witch
On this new installment of Cartoon Network's hit all-ages fantasy action-comedy toon Adventure Time (try that five times fast), we're treated to a Marceline and Princess Bubblegum tale, the first of its kind in nearly two full years! The episode follows up on plot points from a few other episodes, without much catching up done for those who aren't already in the know. First, you gotta know about Hambo, Marceline's treasured childhood toy that was sold to a witch by her terrible ex-boyfriend Ash. Second, you gotta know about PB's t-shirt she wears as pajamas, which Marceline gave to her at some undisclosed past point, when they were closer friends. Got it? Good!
The episode opens with PB waking up in her precious t-shirt, to immediately dress and begin training the kingdom's heroes to overcome a new defense measure she's installed. Interestingly, Finn and Jake are both silent. In fact, the only pre-existing character (besides PB and Marcy) with a speaking role is Cinnamon Bun. Anyhow, Marceline interrupts to ask for the Princess's help tracking down the sky witch, Maja. PB agrees and they're off.
PB helps them get past some traps. There's monsters and creepy ruins and an illusion of Marceline's doll, Hambo. It comes out that Hambo is the reason Marceline has tracked down the witch, and Peebs wants to ditch the whole thing. She doesn't though, and they track down the witch to her big scary house full of hidden background elements referencing other episodes. Seriously, pay attention to the part where Princess Bubblegum is in the attic. There's so much going on in the background there! I love it! Anyway, Peebles finds a box of receipts, including one for the purchase of Hambo from Ash! The sky witch herself shows up just then, taunting that the doll (useful to the witch's magic for its immense sentimental value) can't just be taken back, as it was sold legitimately. Bubblegum agrees, and the camera cuts back to Marceline fighting a monster in the lower part of the house. The Princess comes down the stairs with Hambo in hand and they two main ladies escape the creepy house and the weird forest in which it resides.
Back in Maja's house, she's gloating over her new possession, an item that is more valuable to the witch, for it has so much more love in it than Hambo did: PB's t-shirt from Marceline!
This episode further develops the relationship between Marceline and Princess Bubblegum without going into too much detail. This idea of giving backstory without showing everything is a common thread in Adventure Time, and it makes the show more rewarding for long-time and repeat viewers. This episode in particular is great for those who have been watching the show from the start and paying attention to the subtle continuity stuff.
