Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 24 - Recap - Another Five More Short Graybles

Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 24 - Recap - Another Five More Short Graybles

This week, Cartoon Network's Adventure Time is third in a series of episodes consisting of five interconnected short stories (called "graybles") narrated by a weirdo puffy bighead guy in the future (voiced by series creator Pendleton Ward). The last two both had a secret hidden theme between the shorts, and this one follows suit (according to the promos, the theme is dads).

First up is a fun little piece with Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, and Jake Jr. (Jake's half-rainicorn daughter). Jake is being really dadly to his ennui-laden daughter (who is now technically older than him, because she ages fast), and the bit amounts to an extended visual gag with Jake's shapeshifting powers acting out a little scene where he delivers a "time machine" to Finn in a wig. The next grayble is Cinnamon Bun getting his nightlight taken away by Princess Bubblegum, then going on a rampage trying to find the perfect amount of light to sleep. Cinnamon Bun also runs through the other shorts, with this crazy Goldilocks fickleness about his lights.

While the Candy Kingdom burns in the background, Ice King has a movie night with his penguins. Ice King is kinda super crazy, so instead of just watching what he wants, he tries to trick the penguins into choosing it, and the move doesn't work. Cinnamon Bun comes back to transition us to the next grayble when he crashes into Castle Lemongrab. This part of the episode was pure terror, with the two Earls of Lemongrab playing with a doll and pretending it is their son, then fighting over the doll until on of them devours the other alive and screaming.

Luckily, we cut away quickly to the last grayble, featuring Mr. Fox returning from a trip to find... a ghost of himself (?) drawing a map to treasure (??), before Cinnamon Bun interrupts by crashing through the wall. Back at Finn and Jake's treehouse, Cinnamon Bun breaks in again, interrupting their ludicrous make-believe time machine game. Jake Jr. gets Cinnamon Bun to go away by giving him a nightlight shaped like Jake.

Aaaaand that's the episode! Really strangely structured, and very tightly compressed (even for the series). A good episode, better than last week's for sure! Come back next week for another recap as this season nears it's conclusion!
