Adventure Time - Season 5 Episode 23 - Recap - One Last Job

A great little heist story, this week's Adventure Time is Jake-centric. He's delivered a videotape showing his captured daughter, Jake Jr. An ominous voiceover tells him he's got to steal a super valuable sugar crystal from the Candy Kingdom vault. To do this, Jake must assemble his old crew: Gareth, aka "The Lady Master"; master impressionists The Flying Lettuce Brothers; and his old friend, Tiffany.

Jake assembles the crew through the power of montage, then sits them down to explain the caper. They start out with a pretty good ruse getting the head of the Banana Guard to drink banana juice, then the Flying Lettuce Bros. impersonate him over the loudspeaker to get the guards outside. Jake did a little stretchy thing so he was hiding by covering the whole ceiling; I liked that little moment quite a bit.

After Jake gets through a video game reference in the form of a side-scrolling action sequence, he finally reaches the crystal. The voice from the tape calls out to have Jake throw it before Jake Jr. will be released, and after some resistance, Jake throws it. The person who catches it, though, isn't a kidnapper at all! It turns out Jake's crew was behind the heist! Jake gives chase, growing huge and crashing through walls in a rage.

During the chase, a cloaked figure, the secret mastermind, is revealed. It turns out, Jake Jr. faked her own kidnapping in order to follow in Jake's footsteps (though Jake had long left his criminal past behind him). Jake and Jake Jr. reconcile and head home, Jake chastising his daughter and her reminding him that her magical aging means she is already an adult.

I was honestly disappointed by this new episode. It wasn't particularly funny, and the premise was far bigger than the execution. Still, the worst episodes of Adventure Time are still better than the best episodes of some other shows. Hopefully things will take a turn for the better next week!
