Academy Announces Finalists for Best Documentary Short Oscar

The finalists have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Best Documentary Short Subject Oscar.

From the 58 eligible films, the Academy narrowed the list of finalists down to just eight film. From these eight films, five will be nominated for the Oscar when nominations are announced on January 15, 2015.

The finalists are:

1. Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1: an HBO original documentary that tells the story of traumatized American veterans.

2. Joanna: from Wajda Studio, this film centers on a terminally ill mother who makes a list of everything she wished she could teach her son.

3. Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace: produced by Show of Force, this PBS documentary focuses on the works of the eponymous New York-based artist.

4. The Lion’s Mouth Opens: a production of Tree Tree Tree, this film tells the tale of a woman facing the possibility that she has inherited Huntington’s disease.

5. One Child: from New York University, One Child revolves around three families from Beichuan, China, struggling to move on following the loss of their children.

6. Our Curse: an entry from the Warsaw Film School, this movie centers on a husband and wife whose child is born with Odine's disease, also called Odine's Curse. It's a potentially fatal congenital respiratory disease.

7. La Parka: the movie, which translates to "The Reaper," comes from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico and recounts the life of a man who worked at a slaughter house for over two decades.

8. White Earth: a production of Weary Traveler, this movie probes the current oil boom in North Dakota.

This is an eclectic, international list that should leave us with five worthy nominees, come January -- no matter which five are selected. That said, if I had to guess, I'd say Crisis Hotline, Joanna, One Child, Our Curse, and La Parka get in, simply because they seem like the sort of films the Academy would go for. But this is hardly a science, either way, so all guesses are welcome!
