ABC Renews 'Dancing With the Stars' and More, But Cancels a Bunch of Comedies
The renewals and cancellations continue to roll in! After last night's massive announcement of over eight renewals and series pick-ups, ABC has gone further by announcing the renewal of one venerable favorite, and the cancellation of three others.
ABC has renewed Dancing With the Stars for a 19th cycle, and while the press release didn't specify, it's assumed the show will maintain its once-a-week, combined performance/results show format. Also renewed are three other reality hits: The Bachelor, Shark Tank, and America's Funniest Home Videos. It's unknown, as of yet, if The Bachelor's renewal is a package that includes The Bachelorette, but since the shows often go hand-in-hand, I would imagine The Bachelorette will return, provided the latest season, premiering in two weeks, doesn't bomb horribly.
However, the good news didn't extend to three on-the-bubble comedies, as ABC giveth, and ABC taketh away.
The network has canceled first-year comedies Trophy Wife and Mixology, while also axing second-year sitcom The Neighbors. The shows never managed to find an audience beyond their respective cult followings (well, in Mixology's case, it was a complete non-following, as the Ryan Seacrest-produced sitcom was both a critical and commercial failure right out the gate).
Keep it locked here as renewal and cancellation news continues to come in!
UPDATE: ABC has just canceled Suburgatory, lending credence to the idea that the network is razing its entire comedy lineup, and then salting the Earth so that nothing may grow again.
The Rebel Wilson-starring comedy Super Fun Night has been canceled after one season as well. Although that's far less of a surprise, given how quickly ABC seemed to give up on the show.
