12 Years A Slave is one of the top contenders for the Oscar, and its writer is already reaping the rewards.

ABC has given the greenlight to a TV project from screenwriter John Ridley, who found commercial success with the Barbershop franchise, and critical success with 12 Years A Slave. Ridley will also executive produce along with Michael McDonald (Showtime's Web Therapy).

There aren't too many details about the premise of the series, but this logline gives off a Law & Order: Hate Crimes Unit vibe: “The personal lives of the players involved in a racially charged trial are examined as their worlds are turned upside down.”

If nothing else, the show should be an interesting examination of race relations in the modern era, as contrasted with Ridley's work on 12 Years A Slave. Count me among those looking forward to this.
