ABC Cancels 'Selfie'
It's curtains on the tale of Henry and Eliza.
ABC has canceled Selfie, the sitcom adaptation of My Fair Lady starring Karen Gillan and John Cho. The series pulled an underwhelming 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic earlier this week after the show expanded to one-hour to fill the vacancy created by the cancellation of timeslot partner Manhattan Love Story.
However, unlike Manhattan Love Story, Selfie will be allowed to finish airing all of its 13 episodes. But its schedule beyond next Tuesday's back-to-back airing is unknown. This cancellation more or less confirms that audiences aren't in the mood for romantic comedies in sitcom form. Past sitcoms have been able to thrive with a "Will they or won't they?" element, but those sorts of shows (series like Frasier, Friends, and even more modern fare like The Office and New Girl) had other things going for them. The entire show wasn't the romance, it was merely one facet. But for canceled series like A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and now Selfie, the romance was essentially the entire show. And that doesn't seem like a formula that can work outside of a corny 90-minute Katherine Heigl movie. And, honestly, that's kind of a shame. I loved A to Z, and I thought Selfie was a genuinely charming show. Hopefully, Gillan and Cho land on a project that will actually last. They're too talented not to be on TV right now.
