Of ABC's four new fall comedies, the network has given additional orders to three, while cancelling one.

ABC has granted full season orders to The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife, picking up the back nine episodes for the two Tuesday night comedies. Both shows deliver respectable, if unspectacular, numbers for the network. The Goldbergs, starring Bridesmaids star Wendi McLendon-Covey, Patton Oswalt and Jeff Garlin, averages 7.5 million viewers for a 2.7 rating in the key adults 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, Trophy Wife, starring Malin Akerman and Bradley Whitford, draws 5.7 million viewers for a 1.9 rating. As an in-house production of ABC Studios, Trophy Wife has a bit more support behind it, despite having lower ratings than some of the shows that haven't made it out of the season alive. For example...

ABC has given the ax to Back in the Game, the baseball comedy starring James Caan and Maggie Lawson. The comedy averaged 7.3 million viewers for a 2.1 rating, yet what it made up for in okay ratings, it completely lacked in buzz. This cancellation is likely the result of there being no indication that the audience would grow, given the complete lack of buzz about the series, unlike with fellow comedies Trophy Wife and Super Fun Night.

On the subject of Super Fun Night, ABC has picked up an extra four episodes of the Wednesday night comedy starring Rebel Wilson. The show averages a solid 7.4 million viewers and a 2.8 rating, which is solid enough by any rubric where sitcoms in the new fall season are concerned.
