ABC Is Doing Another 'Bachelor' Spinoff, For the Night Is Dark and Full of Terrors
From ABC, the network that brought you The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, The Bachelor Pad, and a host of unrelated Peanuts gang specials comes a new take on the reality dating franchise.
ABC has ordered Bachelor In Paradise, a series in which alums of the other shows in the Bachelor franchise shack up and chase love in some tropical location. The official description: “The romantic dating series will feature new twists, shocking surprises, unexpected guests and some of the most unlikely relationships in Bachelor history, plus all the usual romance, drama and tears we’ve come to expect from the Bachelor franchise. No airdate has been set, but the next edition of The Bachelorette kicks off May 19. It all comes together in the romantic television event of the summer.”

Despite the continuing success of The Bachelor, I'm not really sure how this got the greenlight, since franchise side projects don't tend to do all that well. Hell, ABC cancelled The Bachelor Pad for failing to prop up their languid summer schedule, which had slowly become the televised equivalent of a limp noodle. Bachelor in Paradise simply sounds like a warmed-over reheat of Temptation Island mixed with Paradise Hotel leftovers, so I'm skeptical that the show will prove to be much use to any but the most hardcore Bachelor fanatics. And for people who aren't sick of Jake Pavelka and Juan Pablo Galavis. (Come on, you know the future for him is either another singles show, or VH1's Couples Therapy)
The spinoff comes from franchise creator/agent of compromise Mike Fleiss, with Chris Harrison as host. Because a Bachelor series without Chris Harrison would be like a rose ceremony without barely-repressed angst.
