88th Academy Award Nominations: 'The Revenant' Leads With 12, 'Mad Max' With 10
It's Oscar nominations morning! Welcome to our live blog of the nominations announcement, as John Krasinski, Guillermo Del Toro, Ang Lee and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs will be on-hand shortly to announce the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards!
I'll be live-updating as the nominations are announced, but right now, it's looking like The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road are poised to lead with the most nominations, although we shouldn't count out Spotlight and The Big Short, two films with considerable awards season resumes up to this point. I also wouldn't be surprised if The Martian ended up nabbing the most nominations, although I think it's ultimately going to be a close call for the film that ends up leading the pack. Our own Oscar nomination predictions are a bit of a mixed bag as it is, so even if the picks don't line up, I'm ready for this year's nominations announcement to feature some big surprises. Not that I expect all that many, but I would think we'd get at least some. I'm anxious to see what the Academy has decided.
Check out the nominations for the 2016 Oscars below, and keep refreshing, as we'll be updating with nominees and commentary as the morning rolls on!

Thoughts: A lot of BIG shockers, namely the snubs for Ridley Scott and the Best Picture miss for Carol (and to a lesser extent, the screenplay snubs for Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino). At this rate, I'm thinking Scott is never going to win an Oscar, unless they give him an honorary prize at some point down the road. I think The Martian has been his best shot since Gladiator back in 2000 (or maybe Black Hawk Down a year later). It's a shame he missed out, and yet I can't fault the Academy for the directors they DID choose, since Lenny Abrahamson did tremendous work with Room. In fact, it didn't surprise me all that much that Room ended up being the indie darling of the Oscars, although I didn't really think it'd be at the expense of Carol, which I thought was a sure-thing for Best Picture. Also, the handful of nominations for Star Wars: The Force Awakens makes me wonder just how close it came to scoring a Best Picture nomination. Had it come out a bit earlier in the year, maybe it would have had time to build up steam. Or maybe it would have run out of whatever steam it had by then, who knows?
What I do know is that, once again, the Best Original Song category continues to be a delight. When I initially saw that Fifty Shades of Grey earned a Best Original Song nomination, I figured it was "Love Me Like You Do". But when the official list came out, it turns out it was "Earned It", which makes The Weeknd an Academy Award nominee now! By the same token, LADY GAGA is now an Oscar nominee! Her song, co-written with Oscar's go-to "bridesmaid but never a bride" Diane Warren, is from the rape documentary The Hunting Ground, and it could be a chance for Lady Gaga to add to her Golden Globes win for American Horror Story. Going in, I thought this would be Sam Smith's category to lose, but now I'm not so sure, since Warren is seriously overdue. And then there's J. Ralph, who scores his third nomination as he's quickly becoming the go-to guy for writing a compelling song for a documentary. Should be an interesting Oscar race.
