5 Songs That Should Be Covered On 'Nashville'
As it's Labor Day and there's not much news around, I thought I'd do something a little fun.
I am a huuuuge fan of ABC's hit drama 'Nashville', the music is amazing and I could gush about it all for days. Sometimes the characters cover songs from the real country music world as well as their original songs. Past examples have included Deacon (Chip Esten) covering classic 'Matchbox Blues', Maddie & Daphne (Lennon & Maisy Stella) covering The Lumineers' 'Ho Hey', Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Will (Chris Carmack) covering Ashley Monroe and Blake Shelton's 'You Ain't Dolly (And You Ain't Porter)', and finally Scarlett (Clare Bowen) covering the Johnny Cash classic 'Ring of Fire'.
But as the second season approaches, what other songs do I think they should cover?
Crazy - Patsy Cline
They like to throw in a few classic covers, and I think this would be a great one, particularly for some of the new characters coming in. It's a big belter and everybody knows it. It's also a great song.
You’re No-One ‘Til Someone Lets You Down – John Mayer
This amazing traditional country song is on John’s latest album Paradise Valley, and would be great for one of those open mic honky-tonk scenes that they’re so fond of on Nashville! I’m thinking Deacon or Gunnar!
Keep It To Yourself/Stupid – Kacey Musgraves
Kacey co-wrote Juliette’s song ‘Undermine’ in the first season, so like Ashley Monroe, who co-wrote ‘Consider Me’ and later got covered, I figure they’ll cover some Kacey this coming season. ‘Keep It To Yourself’ is a little gem and a perfect country ballad for the kind of music they tend to feature on the show. There’s also the distinct possibility of them covering ‘Stupid’, which would also fit, and in one of the episodes it was featured playing in the background at a bar.
I Won’t Back Down – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have a storytelling aspect to their music that really fits country in general, and I think Nashville are due to cover something that needs a bit of a switch-up. ‘I Won’t Back Down’ has an edgy new-Rayna feel to it, so you never know. Concert special? Plus, Tom Petty has been in the country music news of late with his controversial comments, so might be something to entice fans.
Last Call – Lee Ann Womack
Could hardly have a list like this without a potential Rayna and Deacon duet cover, right? I’m completely obsessed with them (who isn’t?!), and this song is a longtime love as mine, as well as one that has reminded me of this hot couple since the first episode premiered. It follows a similar storyline to their relationship, and highlights all of the alcohol-fuelled tensions and heartbreak between them.
‘Nashville’ returns to ABC on Wedneday, September 25, at 10/9c. See you there!
